La Selva Giardino del Belvedere | Jose Villa Italy Workshop

You know when you have one of those life-changing moments? It happened to me a few months ago when I was given the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the amazing Jose Villa. A true artist – passionate, inspiring, dedicated (the list could go on and on!). After shooting with Jose, my life changed in ways that I cannot fully describe to this day. When I came home, John could see how happy I was and how I began to see life so differently. Jose reminded me of how important it is to believe in yourself and stay true to who you really are. Watching Jose and his sister, Nancy, work together was also a dream.

Shortly after that trip, John surprised me with a ticket to Italy for a workshop with Jose and Gene Higa as an anniversary gift. I felt like I was in the clouds, and still do. I met so many incredible colleagues who I now call friends. We felt such a special connection – like a big Italian family. I learned so much from Jose and Gene, and will be forever grateful. I also met Ann Hamilton, who has the most beautiful heart. To have my hometown friend Bob Davis at the workshop as well was awesome, and he even took some portraits of me (thanks again, Bob!). Joel Serrato, thanks for being such an inspiration! The Chianti Farm Villa where we stayed was great, and Jen Curtis went above and beyond to make us all feel special. The models, the style, the hair and make-up by Mar, and everything else was just perfect! I loved everything about my Italian experience – from the workshop to the people to the culture and landscape. One week in my life that will forever stay in my heart.

■ WPPI 2009 Recap

WPPI is the big show of the year for Photographers who come from all over the world. It stands for Wedding & Portrait Photographers International. Every year it is hosted in the greatest city in the country, Viva Las Vegas! This convention is packed with tons of platform classes and the largest photography tradeshow. And you can’t forget that the night is left open for great parties.

We just came back from Vegas with a little recap of our entire adventure.

First, on the way to Las Vegas, we shared the plane ride with Bob and Dawn Davis. They sat right in front of us. They are such wonderful people. Annahlu kept asking for Bobby and Alli, their kiddos. WPPI was hosted at the MGM Grand Hotel, where Annahlu got to see the lions and got to run all over.

As we were walking down the strip, I took a shot of New York , New York.

John captured a picture of the welcome Reception hosted by Canon featuring Yervant, Joe Bussink, Jerry Ghionis, Dennis Reggi, and Bambi Cantrell as they worked their magic during a mock wedding. We sat 2nd row with a great view.

He also captured a picture of me spending time at the “A Portrait Project” booth, a non-profit organization to support women of domestic violence. I am so proud to be part of this organization along with Christine Bentley, Krisite Hancock, and Dawn Davis. We were able to collect many names of volunteer photographers needed to get the database started. Be sure to check out Christine’s blog for more information on when the website will be launched. I am so proud of her and happy to be part of her dream. John also got a shot of me while walking the tradeshow floor when I happened to run into Yervant, I love his work.

John was so excited to upgrade to a nice set of PX Radio Poppers. He can’t wait for the Nikon version of the Pocket Wizards to be released. He got a Shoot at the Neon Graveyard with the Group of [B] Schoolers & Becker. And one of me at break time for twitter while charging the battery, I work really hard :)

Here is a picture of John in action and one of us together :)

And the super cool night shoot with the amazing Bob Davis. It was so much fun and we met many old and new faces. Special thanks to Ed Weiland for the great models that he provided for us.

WPPI 2009 ended with a bang. The tradeshow was a hit at the MGM. We had a chance to meet with dear friends and so many cool people from the big parties that were hosted pretty much every single night. We also had the pleasure of bringing our little one. Her Nana got to come and saved the day! I’ll be posting some pictures for each shoot we had in Vegas in the following weeks.

Yervant and Joe Buissink

I recently attended a photography seminar led by Yervant and Joe Buissink. Yervant and Joe both have such special qualities – most of all hearts of gold with a dash of passion for their work! I would recommend any photographer out there to attend this seminar. Not only was this seminar a great learning experience, but it was also especially fun as I was reunited with my friends from Vegas! It was awesome spending time again with Ed (thanks for bringing the model, Kelly Campbell), Kym, Kenny, Jen, Vergil, Morgan and the wonderful Bob and Dawn Davis. I love sharing and learning from other photographers. Here’s a few of my favorite shots of the day.
